Hold the compass level with the cover closed and the cord next to your body.  This will allow the compass card to settle on North.

Open the cover slowly.  This locks the compass card in place so you can feel the graduations.

With a finger, find the graduation on the compass card that is closest to the raised index line on the dial, which is near the cover hinge.  This is the direction that you are facing.
